What Is a Head Spa? What to Expect at Your First Visit

A head spa is a treatment for your scalp and hair, the way a facial is for your skin. You lie fully reclined while a specialist cleanses, exfoliates and massages your scalp, and you leave with your hair washed and styled. It is part scalp care and part deep relaxation.

If you have never had one, here is what to expect at Monarch Haus in North Andover.

What happens during a head spa

  1. Scalp analysis. A magnified camera shows your scalp up close, on screen, so you can see buildup, dryness or oil before your treatment begins.

  2. Cleanse and exfoliation. A deep, gentle cleanse at the head spa bed to clear buildup and refresh your scalp.

  3. Massage. Therapeutic head, neck and shoulder massage to release tension.

  4. Blow-dry and after scan. You finish with a professional blow-dry and a second look at your scalp, so you can see the difference.

Most rituals include the before-and-after scalp analysis, and nearly all finish with a professional blow-dry.

How long does a head spa take?

Plan for 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, depending on the ritual you choose. Long or thick hair may need extra time. Please arrive 10 minutes early to check in and change into your spa robe.

Which ritual should I book first?

Most first-time guests choose The Essential Reset: 1 hour 30 minutes, with 45 minutes at the head spa bed. It includes scalp analysis before and after, cleanse, exfoliation, therapeutic scalp, neck and shoulder massage and a full blow-dry.

  • Short on time? The Monarch Express is 1 hour, with 30 minutes at the head spa bed.

  • Men and very short hair: The King’s Ritual is 45 minutes and finishes with a rough-dry.

  • Expecting, or can’t fully recline? The Nesting Ritual is done at the shampoo bowl.

  • Want the full experience? The Monarch Ritual adds red light therapy, a hair mask and steam.

Do I need to come with clean hair?

No. Clean or second-day hair is fine, and so is makeup. Your scalp analysis lets your specialist tailor the treatment to how your scalp looks that day.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes. Up to four guests can be treated side by side, so a head spa is an easy outing with a friend, partner or family member.
